Conditionnel présent progressif

Forme

Dans les phrases conditionnelles de type 2, la forme progressive du présent conditionnel peut être utilisée.

Proposition introduite par If (condition) Proposition principale (résultat)
If + passé simple conditionnel présent progressif
If this thing happened that thing would be happening.

Fonction

Cette forme est courante dans les phrases conditionnelles de type 2. Elle exprime une action inachevée ou progressive qui est le résultat probable d'une condition irréelle.

Exemples
  • I would be working in Italy if I spoke Italian. (But I don't speak Italian, so I am not working in Italy)
  • She wouldn't be living with Jack if she lived with her parents. (But she is living with Jack and not with her parents).
  • You wouldn't be smiling if you knew the truth. (But you are smiling because you don't know the truth.)

Le conditionnel présent progressif

Le conditionnel présent progressif est composé de trois éléments :
would + be + participe présent
Le participe présent est formé en prenant le verbe de base et en ajoutant la terminaison -ing.
